Phil Patton: Bug : The Strange Mutations of the World's Most Famous Automobile

Bug : The Strange Mutations of the World's Most Famous Automobile

Description

"Herbie." "Punchbuggy." "Beetle." The world's most recognizable automobile goes by many noms de plume. But did you know that the "Love Bug" was originally conceived as Hitler's "car of the people," or that it was the Manson "family"'s car of choice?Tapping into Americans' continuing obsession with the VW Bug, Phil Patton has written a kaleidoscopic history of the car from the 1950s to the 2000s. He describes the genius marketing strategy used in America to rid the car of its Fascist associations (VW hired a Jewish marketing team), and explains why designers are obsessed with its shape (the Bug, like the Pantheon, fits the Greek "golden ellipse" ideal of dimension). Patton posits that the Bug was the first car to cause Americans to "wrap themselves in a brand as an extension of their ideology," and turn up their noses at the huge, showy cars produced in Detroit. Amazingly, it worked, and, based on the Beetle's continuing status as an American cultural icon, it still does. As Jonathan Yardley asserted in the Washington Post Book Review "The original Bug was more than a car, it was an experience."

Instructional Materials for the Spanish / English Secondary Classroom : An Annotated Bibliography

Description

One of the challenges of teachers of bilingual, English learners from Spanish speaking backgrounds is the scarcity of authentic materials that are available to them to use with their students. This is especially significant at the secondary level. We often find materials that are poorly translated and are not culturally appropriate or relevant. Bilingual teachers who have completed our credential program have consistently returned to me with complaints about this dearth of materials and have asked for my assistance in identifying better materials and resources. Over the past few years, I have assigned my bilingual credential students to find the best culturally relevant materials that are out there and to provide suggestions for how best to use these materials in the classroom. I have gathered together this annotated bibliographic collection as a effort on my part and the part of my students to help our current bilingual teachers in getting a better sense of what bilingual and bicultural materials are available and how they can effectively use them in their classrooms. It is our hope that this collection will contribute to improving the educational experiences of Spanish speaking English learners.

Michael Coveney: Maggie Smith: A Biography

Maggie Smith: A Biography

Description

No one does glamour, severity, girlish charm or tight-lipped witticism better than Dame Maggie Smith, one of Britain's best-loved actors. This new biography shines the stage-lights on the life and work of a truly remarkable performer, one whose career spans six decades. From her days as a star of West End comedy and revue, Dame Maggie's path would cross with those of the greatest actors, playwrights and directors of the era. Whether stealing scenes from Richard Burton (by his own admission), answering back to Laurence Olivier, or impressing Ingmar Bergman, her career can be seen as a Who's Who of British theatre in the twentieth century. This book also covers her success in Hollywood, inaugurated by her first Oscar for her signature film, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, as well as her subsequent departure to Canada for a prolific four-season run of leading theatre roles. Recently Dame Maggie has been as prominent on our screens as ever, with high-profile roles as Violet Crawley, the formidable Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the phenomenally successful television series Downton Abbey, and as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter film franchise: what she herself describes as 'Miss Jean Brodie in a wizard's hat'. Yet paradoxically she remains an enigmatic figure, rarely appearing in public and carefully guarding her considerable talent. Michael Coveney's absorbing biography, drawing on personal archives, interviews and encounters with the actress, as well as conversations with immediate family and dear friends, is therefore as close as it gets to seeing the real Maggie Smith.

Thunder Rose vows to grow up to be" more" than just big and strong, thank you very kindly--and boy, does she ever! But when a whirling storm on a riotous rampage threatens, has Rose finally met her match? To navigate our way through a world in which people's private lives are so often subject to public scrutiny and debate, and in which the public sphere is increasingly pluralized and contested, we must broaden our understanding of what it means to be a citizen. Through the idea of "intimate citizenship," Plummer sets an important agenda for the years to come. It is a sad moment when a young The Hiltons: The True Story of an American Dynasty free ebook boy discovers he doesn't have enough money to buy the waggely tailed dog he sees in the pet store window. Nothing but that waggely tailed pup will do as a pet for the boy, so he's off to make some money to buy the dog of his dreams!

The Hiltons: The True Story of an American Dynasty

Description

THE HILTONS is a sweeping saga of the success - and excess - of an iconic American family. Demanding and enigmatic, patriarch Conrad Hilton's visionary ideas and unyielding will established the model for the modern luxury hotel industry. But outside the boardroom, Conrad struggled with emotional detachment, failed marriages, and conflicted Catholicism. Then there were his children: Playboy Nicky Hilton's tragic alcoholism and marriage to Elizabeth Taylor was the stuff of tabloid legend. Barron Hilton, on the other hand, deftly handled his father's legacy, carrying the Hilton brand triumphantly into the new millennium. Eric, raised apart from his older brothers, accepted his supporting role in the Hilton dynasty with calm and quiet - a stark contrast to the boys' much younger half-sister Francesca, whose battle for recognition led her into courtrooms and conflict. The cast of supporting players includes the inimitable Zsa Zsa Gabor, who was married to Conrad briefly and remained a thorn in his side for decades, and a host of other Hollywood and business luminaries with whom the Hiltons crossed paths and swords over the years.

Tales of the Jazz Age download book

F. Scott Fitzgerald: Tales of the Jazz Age

Tales of the Jazz Age

Description

'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' sees a baby born in 1860 begin life as an old man and then age backwards. F. Scott Fitzgerald hinted at this kind of inversion when he called his era 'a generation grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken'. Perhaps nowhere in American fiction has this 'Lost Generation' been more vividly preserved than in Fitzgerald's short fiction. Spanning the early twentieth-century American landscape, this collection captures, with Fitzgerald's signature blend of enchantment and disillusionment, America during the Jazz Age.

An American translation of the definitive "Guide Culinaire," the classic guide to French "haute cuisine," the "Escoffier Cookbook" includes weights, measurements, quantities, and terms according to American usage. Features 2,973 recipes. Japanese-style rope bondage and erotic macrame may look complicated and intimidating, but you can learn the basics of this beautiful, sexy art form today. Bondage artist and educator Lee Harrington takes you step by step through a variety of concepts and ties, giving you the tools to make aesthetically rewarding ropework. Each tutorial is broken down into easy-to-follow photographs by RiggerJay with detailed descriptions of each step, including how to tie all those knots. From restrictive poses that limit movement to decorative rope that accentuates the human form, "Shibari You Can Use" includes instruction on creating Shinju (chest harnesses), Gyaku Ebi (Asian-style hogtie), Ebi or Kuri (shrimp or ball ties), rope corsets, strap-on harnesses and crotch ropes, and much more. How do you discuss your desires? What if you feel silly the first time? Where do you turn if you re experienced Tales of the Jazz Age download book and need new ideas? What about rope care? Open up the pages of "Shibari You Can Use" to find answers to these and other questions. Pick up this book, shake off your fears about tying someone up, and get some rope, and you too can learn Japanese-style rope bondage and erotic macrame."

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Description

Muriel Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie includes an introduction by Candia McWilliam in Penguin Modern Classics. Romantic, heroic, comic and tragic, unconventional schoolmistress Jean Brodie has become an iconic figure in post-war fiction. Her glamour, unconventional ideas and manipulative charm hold dangerous sway over her girls at the Marcia Blaine Academy - 'the creme de la creme' - who become the Brodie 'set', introduced to a privileged world of adult games that they will never forget. Muriel Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was adapted into a successful stage play, and later a film directed by Ronald Neame and starring Maggie Smith. Muriel Spark (1918 - 2006) wrote poetry, stories, and biographies as well as a remarkable series of novels, including The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1961), The Mandelbaum Gate (1965) which received the James Tait Black Prize, and The Public Image (1968) and Loitering with Intent (1981), both of which were shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Spark was awarded the T.S. Eliot Award for poetry in 1992, and the David Cohen Prize for literature in 1997. If you enjoyed The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, you might like Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, also available in Penguin Modern Classics. 'A sublimely funny book ...it is a book to be read by all ...unforgettable and universal' Candia McWilliam, author of Debatable Land

The brainchild of Admiral Sir John Fisher, battlecruisers combined heavy guns and high speed in the largest hulls of their era. Conceived as 'super-cruisers' to hunt down and destroy commerce raiders, their size and gun-power led to their inclusion in the battlefleet as a fast squadron of capital ships. The origins of the unusual 'light battlecruisers' of the Courageous type are also covered. The developmental history is backed by chapters covering machinery, armament and armour, with a full listing of important technical data. The comprehensive collection of illustrations includes the author's superb drawings and original Admiralty plans reproduced in full colour. This revised and updated edition of the classic work first published in 1997 will be welcomed by anyone with an interest in the most charismatic and controversial warships of the dreadnought era.

Claude & Camille: A Novel of Monet

Description

"Sometimes he dreamt he held her; that he would turn in bed and she would be there. But she was gone and he was old. Nearly seventy. Only cool paint met his fingers. Ma tres chere . . . Darkness started to fall, dimming the paintings. He felt the crumpled letter in his pocket. I loved you so, he said. I never would have had it turn out as it did. You were with all of us when we began, you gave us courage. These gardens at Giverny are for you but I m old and you re forever young and will never see them. . . . " "" In the mid-nineteenth century, a young man named Claude Monet decided that he would rather endure a difficult life painting landscapes than take over his father s nautical supplies business in a French seaside town. Against his father s will, and with nothing but a dream and an insatiable urge to create a new style of art that repudiated the Classical Realism of the time, he set off for Paris. But once there he is confronted with obstacles: an art world that refused to validate his style, extreme poverty, and a war that led him away from his home and friends. But there were bright spots as well: his deep, enduring friendships with men named Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro, Manet a group that together would come to be known as the Impressionists, and that supported each other through the difficult years. But even more illuminating was his lifelong love, Camille Doncieux, a beautiful, upper-class Parisian girl who threw away her privileged life to be by the side of the defiant painter and embrace the lively Bohemian life of their time. His muse, his best friend, his passionate lover, and the mother to his two children, Camille stayed with Monet and believed in his work even as they lived in wretched rooms, were sometimes kicked out of those, and often suffered the indignities of destitution. She comforted him during his frequent emotional torments, even when he would leave her for long periods to go off on his own to paint in the countryside. But Camille had her own demons secrets that Monet could never penetrate, including one that when eventually revealed would pain him so deeply that he would never fully recover from its impact. For though Camille never once stopped loving the painter with her entire being, she was not immune to the loneliness that often came with being his partner. A vividly-rendered portrait of both the rise of Impressionism and of the artist at the center of the movement, "Claude and Camille" is above all a love story of the highest romantic order. "From the Hardcover edition.""

Sandy Irvine was a twenty-two-year-old Oxford scholar with little previous mountaineering experience. Neither of them returned. Like us, honeybees represent a pinnacle of animal sociality. How they submerge individual needs into the colony collective provides a lens through which to ponder human societies. Winston Goddess of the Hunt download ebook explains how bees process information, structure work, and communicate, and examines how corporate boardrooms are using bee societies as a model to improve collaboration. He investigates how bees have altered our understanding of agricultural ecosystems and how urban planners are looking to bees in designing more nature-friendly cities.

Teaching Secondary School Mathematics: Research and Practice for the 21st Century

Description

Excellent mathematics teachers make a major difference to the learning outcomes of the students they teach. What are the professional skills and knowledge that really matter?..Teaching Secondary School Mathematics is a research based introduction to the professional knowledge, attributes and practices needed to teach mathematics well at secondary level...The authors explain the challenges that secondary mathematics teachers face today, and how they can build on the experiences students bring from primary school and from outside the classroom to ensure students develop concepts and skills in mathematical thinking and a positive attitude to mathematics...They outline the secondary mathematical curriculum and methods of assessment, and examine the pedagogical strategies teachers can use to engage student interest in mathematical concepts. They emphasise the importance of working with mathematical reasoning and problem solving, real world applications, and mathematical communication skills. The core mathematical topics covered at secondary level are reviewed, and the authors also explore the issues teachers need to consider with students of diverse backgrounds...' I highly recommend this book to practising mathematics teachers as well as pre-service teachers. The combination of research and practical teaching ideas ensures current and worthwhile advice for teaching secondary or middle school students.'..Dr Judy Anderson, The University of Sydney..'An excellent book - very readable, interspersed with useful tasks which are grounded in attending to effective classroom practices. A much overdue resource for initial teacher preparation courses.'..Associate Professor Glenda Anthony, Massey University

Meditation: A Book of Ten Lessons

Description

This text presents a foundation-level course in meditation. In ten step-by-step lessons it teaches how to still the thinking mind and reduce worry. It includes more than 30 lessons to use in everyday life.

"Inside of a Dog "explains these things and much more. The answers can be surprising once we set aside our natural inclination to anthropomorphize dogs. "Inside of a Dog "also contains up-to-the-minute research Meditation: A Book of Ten Lessons free pdf on dogs detection of disease, the secrets of their tails, and their skill at reading our attention that Horowitz puts into useful context. Although not a formal training guide, "Inside of a Dog "has practical application for dog lovers interested in understanding why their dogs do what they do. With a light touch and the weight of science behind her, Alexandra Horowitz examines the animal we think we know best but may actually understand the least. This book is as close as you can get to knowing about dogs without being a dog yourself." On September 23, 1939, Wladyslaw Szpilman played Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor live on the radio as shells exploded outside so loudly that he couldn't hear his piano. It was the last live music broadcast from Warsaw: That day, a German bomb hit the station, and Polish Radio went off the air.
